Dr. (Mrs.) Felicia Chinwe Mogo, Founder of the African Marine Environment Sustainability Initiative (AFMESI), delivered a featured keynote at the Women in Energy, Oil and Gas (WEOG) and World Decarbonization Summit (WDS). Her presentation, “Nigerian Blue Economy: Advancing Decarbonization through Collaboration, Innovation, and Sustainable Climate Action,” outlined practical pathways for building a low‑carbon and resilient economy.
Bridging Oil & Gas and Maritime Sectors
Dr. Mogo emphasized the interdependence of Nigeria’s offshore oil & gas and maritime industries, describing them as “inseparable twin sectors.” She highlighted the need for joint decarbonization strategies across shared assets such as ports, offshore vessels, logistics chains, and coastal ecosystems.
Her keynote introduced a streamlined five‑step approach to achieving net‑zero emissions:
- Avoid — Cut unnecessary emissions through digital planning and waste reduction.
- Reduce — Improve energy efficiency and vessel operations.
- Replace — Shift to green fuels and renewable energy.
- Capture — Deploy CCS and methane‑recovery technologies.
- Remove and Store — Expand blue‑carbon solutions like mangrove, seagrass, and wetland restoration.
Unlocking Carbon Markets
She noted that Nigeria’s climate commitments—20% unconditional and 47% conditional emissions reduction by 2030—could unlock up to $2.5 billion in carbon‑credit investments. Through Article 6 mechanisms, emission reductions can become tradable assets, creating opportunities in MRV, carbon registries, climate‑finance development, and carbon‑asset trading.
Call for a Decarbonization Hub
Dr. Mogo encouraged WEOG to establish a women‑led Decarbonization Hub to unite industry, regulators, financiers, and innovators in developing scalable pilot projects.
“The opportunity before us is not simply to discuss Nigeria’s blue economy, but to design and implement the partnerships, innovations, and investments that will make it a reality.” — Dr. Felicia Chinwe Mogo
AFMESI continues to champion evidence‑based research, capacity building, and technology commercialization to advance sustainable ocean action across Africa.
