Dr. Felicia Chinwe Mọgọ is an environmental scientist and has served in the Nigerian civil service for the past 34 years. She holds a PhD in Ecotoxicology from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, as well as earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Technology from the International Institute for Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (IHE) in Delft, the Netherlands. She has continued to be guided by her conviction that environmental sustainability fosters the social and economic resiliency of any society. She is currently the Director of the Marine Environment Management department, at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). As an executive with NIMASA, she provides strategic guidance to over 100 staff; drafts policies on the sustainability of the blue economy to the federal government of Nigeria, as well as to international organizations; coordinates meetings with stakeholders and exchanges best practises on marine environment sustainability. Prior to joining NIMASA, she worked with the Federal Ministry of Environment (Lagos, Nigeria) for 23 years. She held the role of Head of Environmental Assessment Department (Oil and Gas) at the Federal Ministry of Environment and conducted several routine compliance visits to oil and gas industries to ensure spill reduction and prevention, as well as evaluated remediation and post-remediation of oil-spill impacted sites in Nigeria’s oil-producing region (the Niger-Delta). Dr. Mọgọ has been en expert member of several of the United Nations’ groups on sustainability. She became a member of the United Nations advisory body, GESAMP, as an IMO candidate in the year 2014 and served until 2018. She is the Regional Representative (West and Central Africa) at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) – Expert Compliance Meeting, London Protocol (1996) on prevention of dumping of waste and other matters in the marine environment. She is also the National Focal point, IMO – London protocol on prevention of dumping of waste and other matters in the marine environment including marine litter management. Dr. Mọgọ serves as the Project Developer and Coordinator of the UNEP-NIMASA partnership on marine litter management in Nigeria. At the Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos, Nigeria, she lectured Master’s level students on the Conventions of IMO. Dr. Mọgọ created AFMESI out of her unwavering passion to promote healthier and sustainable management of marine resources in Africa.
