Today, 6th October 2025, the African Marine Environment Sustainability Initiative (AFMESI) joins the global community to mark World Habitat Day, themed “Inclusive, Safe, Resilient, and Sustainable Habitats for All.”
As Africa’s leading voice for sustainable ocean governance and Blue Economy transformation, AFMESI emphasizes that our habitats extend beyond the land — they include our coasts, rivers, and oceans, which are vital for livelihoods, food security, and climate resilience.
Why It Matters:
From coastal erosion and marine pollution to unplanned waterfront settlements, Africa’s blue habitats are under increasing pressure. Protecting these ecosystems is essential to ensuring safe and sustainable living spaces for millions who depend on them.
AFMESI’s Commitment:
Through our initiatives — including the UNESCO-IOC Endorsed Decade Project “Sustainable Ocean Resilience for African Communities (SORAC)” — we continue to promote eco-resilient coastal communities, sustainable urban waterfronts, and inclusive Blue Economy practices that balance human development with environmental integrity.
Let’s remember:
Healthy Oceans = Safe Habitats = Sustainable Futures.
Together, we can build resilient habitats from ridge to reef, ensuring a sustainable Africa for generations to come.
